With a trace:original certificate you can guarantee the authenticity and security of a certificate as well as proving what, when, where, by whom, and by which authority the certificate was generated.
Standard certificates of today are usually created using paper or PDF files even though there are clear drawbacks to using these methods such as fraud risk, high costs, lead time to produce, manage and store as well as large environmental impacts.
Verifying paper certificates is a costly process that requires the verifier to see the paper original. It's also subject to forgery and fraud. Verifying PDF certificates is faster and cheaper but the available tools are easy to manipulate, for example a QR code that points to a verification website or central databases that can be accessed through a membership.
With trace:original certificates, we introduce a blockchain based “digital notary service" where everybody without any requirement on membership can instantly verify the authenticity of a certificate.
Combining the positive aspects of paper and PDF
A trace:original certificate combines the positive aspects of paper and PDF files and adds unique strengthened functionalities such as the ability to separate an original from a copy.
If you are the holder of an original you can add information onto the already issued certificate and you have the functionality to cancel/invalidate any issued certificate. If you are the receiver of a copy then it can be instantly verified towards the original. In addition, the certificate is 100% machine readable, includes a full and complete audit trail and is impossible to manipulate without leaving a trace.
